Dcode
A case study by Kevish Sewliya

A platform that connects student developers with open-source projects. Users explore projects, contribute through pull requests, and follow their progress through streaks and a leaderboard.
Problem
Students who want to start with open source often do not know where to begin or how to track their contributions.
My role
Contributor in the DCODE-HQ organisation, working on the backend setup, data models and interface fixes.
What I built
- Backend setup and data models.
- Interface fixes, including the contact page.
- Documentation: README improvements.
Stack
React, Node.js, Firebase, MongoDB, Firebase Auth, Auth0
Facts
- Second-largest contributor to the platform repository by commits: 91 of about 368.
- The DCODE-HQ organisation describes DCODE as a student-led open-source initiative.
Key decisions and trade-offs
Coming soon: a write-up of the technical decisions behind Dcode, and what I would do differently.
